We’re excited to announce that the Promarine Finance team is heading back to the Crick Boat Show.

When you’re buying a used boat, it’s easy to focus on the vessel itself — but the most important part of your purchase might be the paperwork. Here’s why original title documents matter and how to make sure you’re protected.
When you buy a used boat, the title documents are your proof of ownership. Without them, it’s impossible to be certain who really owns the vessel — and that uncertainty can stop a sale or finance application in its tracks.
When a boat is first built and sold, the builder provides:
These are all issued to the first owner.
Every time the boat changes hands, a Bill of Sale (or other written proof of transfer) should be completed between buyer and seller.
For older boats — especially canal boats — this paper trail can be incomplete. In those cases, you can look for other evidence like CRT licences, repair invoices, mooring receipts, or insurance records to confirm ownership.
Original title documents are essential if you plan to apply for boat finance. Lenders like Promarine Finance hold the original paperwork as part of their security — and for good reason.
If the seller can’t produce the original documents, there’s a risk they don’t legally own the boat or don’t have the right to sell it. That’s why missing paperwork should always raise a red flag.
Even if you’re paying in cash, you should always check that the seller’s documents match the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on the vessel and that there’s a clear chain of ownership from the builder to the current owner.
A buyer found their dream motorboat and applied for finance. The seller claimed they’d lost the title documents after settling a previous loan.
Promarine Finance refused to lend until proof of ownership could be confirmed. Six months later, the same boat reappeared for sale under a new owner — the original seller had already sold it once before.
💡 Lesson: If documents are missing, walk away or investigate thoroughly before paying a deposit.
A seller told the buyer there was “no paperwork” but offered reassurance that everything was fine. When that buyer tried to sell the same boat, Promarine Finance discovered it was still under finance with the previous owner.
After investigation, Promarine recovered £45,000, protecting the new buyer from financial loss.
💡 Lesson: If someone says “there’s no paperwork,” assume there’s a problem until proven otherwise.
Another buyer noticed Promarine Finance listed on the paperwork and contacted us before completing the sale. It turned out there was still outstanding finance on the boat — which was settled correctly before purchase.
💡 Lesson: If a lender’s name appears on any paperwork, always contact them directly to confirm the status of the loan.
Before you sign or send any money:
✅ Ask for all original title documents — and check that names, dates, and HIN numbers match.
✅ Contact any listed lender (such as Promarine Finance) to confirm the boat is free of finance.
✅ Run an HPI check using the Hull Identification Number.
✅ Keep a copy of all Bills of Sale and receipts for your records.
A few simple checks can save you from financial loss — and ensure your new boat truly belongs to you.
If you’re buying a used boat and want the peace of mind that comes with professional checks, Promarine Finance can help.
We offer fast, flexible boat finance with a personal touch — and our team can guide you through ownership verification before you buy.

Southampton Boat Show is done for another year – what did we make of it?
Our UK show has a particularly soft spot for us because we started trading at the boatshow in 2010 – we regularly see our very first customer every year and 2025 was no exception.
15 years trading, 8 boatshows, consistent regular growth and financial resources to meet market expectations puts Promarine Finance in a unique and valuable position to help customers and boat dealers alike.
We felt SIBS was busier and had more positive vibes than 2024. We know some exhibitors felt differently but our visitor numbers were up on last year and those walking past our stand seemed more focussed on boats.
The event passed quickly and we had a lot of fun throughout the show and didn’t get too wet whilst getting blown away only once.
Thanks to our team of Julie, Aaron, Oscar and Stuart at the show and our office team of Ross, Kath, Pauline and Liza for keeping us on track.
Thank you to all our customers and dealers and partners who stopped by our stand and sharing their hospitality with us.
We look forward to SIBS 2026 and working with everone in the year ahead.
And if we can be of any help please get in touch.

For 2025 we have decided to relaunch some of our existing offers, and set course to explore new waters too. Designed to support boat buyers, existing boat owners, boat sales companies, and marine companies offering refits, new engines, and upgrades, making finance easier and more accessible.
Our new boat finance offering has been streamlined to align better with the needs of boatbuilders and buyers. Stage payment financing is now easier to access and more flexible, ensuring funds are released in line with the build schedule. Whether you’re having a custom narrowboat built, or ordering your next sailing yacht with lots of extras, we can help finance the journey from keel to commissioning.
Wanting to upgrade the build spec beyond your original budget? We also offer low loan-to-value (LTV) top-up loans, ideal for adding those optional extras that make all the difference, like generators and solar installations, engine upgrades, or bespoke interiors.

Would you like to treat your current boat to a refit, invest in a new engine for improved performance, safety, and reliability, or fit air conditioning for our hot summers? We have simplified our refinance offer to help unlock capital for these and other upgrades, helping you invest in better long-term solutions for your boat’s future.
It’s a great way to make investments in your boat to upgrade performance, improve comfort, or ensure reliability and safety when you need to, not just when you have the funds available.

Crick 2025 was as brilliant as ever, with stunning boats on display, and fantastic entertainment enjoyed in great company. ABBA tribute band ‘Revival’ brought the ‘disco fever’ to the crowds on Saturday night with some great outfits on display, including Liza’s funky trousers!
On Sunday, Stuart teamed up with Paul from Lockgate Stoves in the Kings Lock Chandlery Cup kayak race, taking line honours in the final, but coming in runners-up after a technical disqualification.

Later on, Dan Budd performing as Robbie Williams proved to be a fantastic showman, and was even compared favourably to the real thing by our own Take That and Robbie mega-fan, Kathryn Price.
We had an amazing time catching up with customers and trade friends. Thank you for the warm hospitality – we always love being part of the Crick buzz!
This year saw some interesting developments in the world of inland waterways boating. Electric propulsion (inc hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cells) looks to be growing in popularity, and lots of people were talking about Water Freedom’s on-demand water filtration, and the Cinderella incinerating toilets!
A definite first for us was seeing Adrift Boats HDPE narrowboat, and we will be watching with interest to see how this develops within such a traditional marketplace.
A key focus for us is letting buyers know that finance is available for those looking to start a new life on the inland waterways, as many still aren’t aware, and Crick provides us with the perfect opportunity to do just that.
This year, we had QR code displays on a wide number of boats and stands, and handed out the Haven Knox Johnston, ‘Guide to buying a narrowboat’ featuring our advice on finance. Both proved very popular and really helped to get the message out there that finance is available for inland waterways, including for liveaboard use.
Favourite Boat in Show is always hotly contested, and this year the competition was very strong. In the end, the fantastic Gothic ‘Vampirate’ from Norton Canes took top place, but runner-up ‘Daisy’ from Braidbar Boats was also very popular, with lots of visitors to our stand saying she was their dream narrowboat and perfect in every way!
Third place was well deserved by Ovation Boats with ‘Breaking Bad’, a high spec build with lots of clever features.
Inland waterways lending remains in demand, including in the liveaboard sector, with an increasing number of buyers exploring finance to stretch up to the next level, rather than settle for a boat that isn’t quite right for them.
We also saw growing interest from new boat buyers seeking finance for both full build stage payments and smaller top-ups for upgrades.

As always, we want to thank every single person who came to visit us at our stand – we love attending shows like this as it gives us a rare opportunity to meet as many of you as possible face to face, and share our passion for boating with like-minded people.
If you did speak to us at our stand, and are keen to get started, make sure to contact us today.
